From Apprentice to Legacy
LH Block Electric Company, Inc. traces its roots to the 1950s when Lukas Hunsinger, a European immigrant, founded LH Electric, a small electrical contracting business in the Chicagoland area. In 1972, Randy Block joined as an apprentice with the promise that if he worked hard, he could one day take over the company. Randy fulfilled that promise and purchased the business from Lukas in 1979, at which time the name changed to LH Block Electric Company, Inc.
Randy’s wife, Cathy, soon joined him, helping build the foundation of what would become a multi-generation family enterprise. Together, they grew the company on core principles of hard work, efficiency, integrity, and customer-focused service. Randy passed away in 2024, but his vision and values remain at the heart of LH Block today.
The Next Generation
Randy and Cathy’s sons — Jon, Tom, Danny, and Greg — grew up in the business and gradually took on leadership roles. Today, Cathy serves as a consultant while the brothers manage day-to-day operations:
• Jon Block – Estimating & Sales Project Manager
• Tom Block – Operations Manager
• Danny Block – Marketing
• Greg Block – Service Manager
As Jon likes to say, “Both of our grandfathers were electricians as well, so I like to say we’re third-generation electricians.” The brothers bring different strengths to the table, working together with the same commitment to quality and service that defined the company’s early years.
Growth and Reputation
From its roots as a small local contractor, LH Block has grown into a trusted provider of commercial and industrial electrical services throughout the Chicagoland area. The company is known for its expertise in new construction, renovations, tenant improvements, machine shop relocations, office build-outs, and large multi-unit apartment projects.
A large part of the business has always been repeat customers, including national brands such as Goldfish Swim School, Andy’s Frozen Custard, Trader Joe’s, and Network Global Logistics. Clients rely on LH Block not only for quality workmanship but also for reliability — stepping in to complete challenging projects when others fall short.
One example is the Saint Sophia Greek Orthodox Church in Elgin, Illinois. When the original contractor encountered issues, LH Block was brought in on short notice and delivered a successful outcome, reinforcing the company’s reputation for getting the job done right.
Our Principles
Efficiency and lean operations have always been central to our approach. By keeping overhead low, maintaining strong supplier relationships, and operating thoughtfully, we are able to deliver high-quality electrical work at competitive prices. This “efficient and lean” philosophy guides both our business practices and our family values.
We take pride in finishing what we start — on time and on budget. As Tom often states, “We’re proud to finish what we start on time and on budget.” Our repeat customers know they are getting the best value and highest quality in the industry.
Looking Forward
Today, LH Block continues to honor its founding principles while investing in the future. The company participates in local vocational programs, offers apprenticeships, and maintains strong employee retention by providing stable careers and a supportive culture.
From humble beginnings in the 1950s to a respected third-generation family business serving the Chicagoland area, LH Block Electric remains committed to serving our clients with integrity, reliability, and craftsmanship — carrying forward the legacy built by Randy and Cathy.
